OFFICE CONVERSION TO APARTMENTS
These are my very first series of sketches to establish how many apartments can fit on the existing floor plate. Very please to have cleverly dove tailed in 9 nicely laid out one bedroom apartments. More drawings to follow once we get approval to proceed.
RETAIL AND RESIDENTIAL CONCEPT PROPOSAL
This proposal is for quite a tricky shaped sloping site. I took the site shapes and used them to express the retail component on the ground and first floor. The residential upper floors are set back and given two languages, one cellular the other long clean balconies. The early concept model helped the client visual the design intent.
PRIVATE HOUSE - CLARA ANNA FONTEIN
A restrained elegant street elevation masks a family home that is layered with spaces which slowly reveal themselves to the visitor. The layout forms an rich north facing courtyard space with pool and outdoor fire pit and seating. A double storey kitchen / entertaining space holds centre of attention. From there dining, lounge and outdoor braai spaces reveal themselves, all with “picture window” views. The secure bedroom block floats over the living spaces and provide panoramic views across to Stellenbosch and the mountain range beyond.
PRIVATE HOUSE - SIMON’S TOWN
This client wanted a quick idea of what was possible on this steep site near Simon’s Town. I was given a detailed brief which really helps you focus on the clients wants. The clients also wanted a piece of modern architecture and were happy for me to push the barriers.
PROPOSAL FOR TWO ADDITIONAL NEW DWELLING HOUSES - HOUT BAY
The client for this site approached me asking if I could advise on the Municipal Planning ByLaws for this site. They already knew they could build a further two properties on the site but didn’t know the specific conditions. I prepared a brief summary of the requirements along with this series of images to show diagrammatically how the two new house could fit around the existing one.
INITIAL VIABILITY SKETCHES FOR LITTLE THISTLE BREWERY - ROCHESTER MN, USA
The client for this project was my brother and his wife. They wanted to establish if an existing storage building could be converted into a brewery the size they envisaged. So during a rare family holiday we sat down for a few hours and planned things out, this was mid 2017. Two years later and a hell of a lot of work their dream is realized and the layout isn't far off what we were dreaming back then.
FINALIST - CAPSA ideal workplace competition - LYON FRANCE
Made it through to the last 10 for this competition to design your ideal workspace. The concept of water being the key element of the design was set early on. The building eventually molded itself into a central space held in place by several key container elements. These are then covered by a random sloping CLT roof structure which serves many purposes. Shading, light filtration, water and power storage, design feature and protective umbrella.
MICRO APARTMENT PROPOSAL - WOODSTOCK
Initial design images for an off-site prefabricated modular apartment building. The site for this project was well located in Woodstock, however there is a two storey listed building on the street frontage. This actually helps position and anchor the new apartment block on the site.
CLUBHOUSE PROJECT
Initial concept model for a Clubhouse building. This building is intended to serve the community, providing training and life skills. Its a wonderful project to be involved with.

HOUSE FINNIE - JFCA
The initial concept for our house was a hybrid of the Scottish castle and the Cape long house. The castle for security and strength and the long house for to open plan living.
The north façade has been opened up to maximise the views. A secure cantilevered terrace allows the indoor space to spill out onto the terrace entertainment space.

HOUSE EXTENSION - JFCA
Proposal for a generous ground level entertaining area with shaded seating area and in-built braai and booze counter. On the upper level is a more private “snug” viewing window for the owners which will provide amazing views.

HOUSE STAUB - JFCA
Peter’s brief was for a large family house with an open plan entertaining area leading out onto a terraced pool, and plenty of garage space. The house was raised up on a podium with parking below, commanding the front of the site.
Peter wanted privacy so large glass openings were set back below cantilevered balconies and projecting wall features. I always feel the building entrance should be obvious so we exaggerated the stair enclosure and raised it above all the other features.

HOUSE STEPHENSON - JFCA
Paul wanted a large family house with a big open plan entertaining area leading out onto a terraced pool. The steep site overlooking Chapman’s Peak drive and onerous town planning regulations made the design solution particularly challenging.
A “hinged” plan arrangement was developed to overcome the 10m level difference from the road at the back of the site down to the ground floor living space. The stair acts as the knuckle with the bedroom and garage wings as fixing plates.

“STEP” HOUSE - INITIAL CONCEPT IDEA
On of two concept ideas for a new family house on a tricky sloping tapering site in Hout Bay. The site has amazing views.
With this concept the Client is keen to explore the possibilities of each room having multiple views even through the house itself. This lead to the concept of stepping each room.
Its proving a challenging puzzle which is developing as we go.

CAPE HEALTH TECHNOLOGY PARK - DHK
This first phase was part of a site study and framework developed by the dhk urban design team. As a project associate, I worked closely with them preparing concept images of how the initial development phase could look along with how further phases could be plugged in and around the existing buildings on the site.

HOUSE MURPHY - JFCA
Terry and Debbie wanted to enclose their carport and create a proper entrance and arrival experience to the house. As part of this, we converted outbuildings into a en-suite guest room.
These wonderful clients were a joy to design for.

WHITE CUBE PRIVATE VIEWING FACILITIES - RUNDELL ASSOCIATES
This was a wonderful project as I was surrounded by world class art, creating a simple warehouse with two private viewing galleries at the street entrance. The gallery spaces needed to be of high quality to ensure a seamless experience for the prospective art buyer.
Detailing was kept to a minimum to allow the artwork to take center stage.
