Key Considerations When Choosing an Architect to Design Your Dream Home - Part 1

You are about to embark on the exciting journey of building your dream home?

Selecting the right architect is a crucial step towards turning your vision into reality. As an experienced Scottish architect living and working in the vibrant city of Cape Town, I've compiled a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process with confidence. Let's delve into the essential questions you should ask when appointing an architect for designing your house.

1. What qualifications and credentials should I look for in an architect?

Ensure your architect is a registered professional with the necessary qualifications and certifications. In South Africa, look for membership with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) and affiliations with reputable architectural associations.

2. Ask your architect to provide examples of your previous residential projects

Reviewing a portfolio of past projects gives insight into an architect's style, versatility, and capability to bring your vision to life. Look for designs that resonate with your aesthetic preferences and demonstrate creative problem-solving.

3. How does your architect approach the design process?

Understanding the architect's design methodology is crucial for ensuring a collaborative and successful project. Inquire about their approach to conceptualization, client involvement, and incorporation of sustainable and energy-efficient principles.

Hout Bay Surf Lifesaving Club

These are some images I put together last year for the Sentinel Ocean Alliance in Hout Bay. It was lots of fun.
Hopefully one day Hout Bay and other towns and villages will also get a permanent surf lifesaving club. They are such a positive catalyst for change and creating opportunities for all our youth.

Recent research on shipping container developments.

I have been busy with concept designs for a building using shipping containers. There are some great examples of building types from all around the world. So I thought I’d put a few images together of the ones that caught my eye.

Many of these images give little secrets of how they are put together and detailed. It’s been an interesting deep dive into this building type. Really looking forward to the next step on this particular journey.

2020 End of Year Movie Message

Been a tough old year and I thought I’d do a little festive movie with a message. I also tried to make it a little more professional than last years.

Employing an Architect

My very first writing job……..

These guys approached me and asked if I would consider writing the odd article for their blog - hell yes.

HOW DO I EMPLY AN ARCHITECT CLINK.jpg

That's a bit steep.

Been taking a look back at a great project with a great client. Building approval is imminent. We started a few years back. Then that word - departures grabbed our attention. I have to say the Zoning Scheme could do more for property owners as the scheme doesn't really cater for steep sites. My client cant even access his property without triggering a departure. However its been a challenge and made us become creative. Clockwise from the top left 2009 2017 2018 2019. Its amazing to see where we are now.

Proud father and husband of amazing women

Its been a very long week in SA. My beautiful daughter marched yesterday in Cape Town to give her support as a young woman against the murder, misogyny and patriarchy which prevails in South Africa and many other countries around the world It’s been a deeply sad few days. A government out of touch and a country which hasn’t really addressed the deep scares of apartheid, even though many think we have. So much to do but this is a wonderful country and I need to do my bit and do more. Humbled by a small protest at a roundabout, people standing on each side, drivers hooting their horns, people care but let’s not stop there.

Modular prefabricated micro apartments

Above is a very quick massing model study to test numbers and viability for a site in Cape Town. This would be an amazing addition to the Cape Town lower middle income housing stock, but even more than that prefabrication must be part of the residential mix going forward in Cape Town and South Africa. #modular #prefabrication #micro-living #innercityliving #housingcrisis #residential #design #architecture #urban #urbandesign #sketchup #capetown #southafrica

Work-life balance.

I’ve heard of this phenomenon. Now I really get a chance to test if this is achievable. There is a lot to juggle when your working for yourself, maybe more than I thought. So far so good. It is very early days yet, getting some quality time when required but also put in extra hours in the evenings and weekends without feeling the effects. So why not a wee bit of multi-tasking on the bike. #healthy #gym #thebike #mind #reading #multi-tasking

Jewels

been looking at micro apartments, micro living, low cost and social housing ideas lately in response to a few potential upcoming projects. It’s a fascinating area to be involved in. So I dug out this concept idea I did a few years back for small self-sustaining cottages for rent. The site in Franschhoek was wonderful with a stream running right behind these pod structures, such a tranquil setting. The concept was for each cottage to be an individual jewel and each clad differently with different materials. They could also be clad the same. Would love to have seen them being built. #micro-living #sustainable #design #cladding #architecture #compact #environment hashtag#nature#nature
