community
Over the years I’ve been lucky to be asked if I could help with initiatives in the community, which I have gladly done. Typically a sketch or an idea can leverage some funding or provoke further discussion on even the smallest thing that could benefit a community. My first endeavour was for a Bicycle Repair Container in Imizamo Yetho, Hout Bay. The container had been donated to the start-up, which had then agreed with the community where to place this new business. So we measured out the small site, agreed the best place for the container (allowing for future expansion) and I drew a simple plan on an A3 sheet. This was then taken to the Building Department and approved. I was later told the Building Department couldn’t recall receiving a plan from a township entrepreneur before.
These projects have provided a welcome break from the business of architecture.
MODULAR OFFSITE BUILDING PROTOTYPE
This concept takes a standard modular unit 7m x 9m which is normally made of two sections. The sections are split and then set out to form an internal secure courtyard space.
With our client we are hoping to build one of the these units. Fingers crossed as its a great cause.

TUF - NEW INTERNAL PRODUCTION AND SALES AREA
I was approached by The Umtshayelo Foundation an NPO based in Brackenfell to help them realise their brief.
They have an industrial unit but needed an architect to help them envisage their space. This was a straight forward exercise and has produced a great layout. It also established they didn’t require a build a mezzanine storage space. Therefore lessened the pressure on their fundraising.

BAY WALK - JAMES FINNIE
In 2014 Cape Town was the World Design Capital. I proposed a “walkway” though Hout Bay to help foster stronger links between the three communities in the village.
The center piece being a walkway linking the two sides of the main beach to enhance links and create an experience for all.

TUF - NEW hub ENTRANCE AND INTERNAL ALTERATIONS
Second phase of works for The Umtshayelo Foundation.
NEW STAGE - EDITH STEPHENS WETLAND PARK - GAPP
While working for GAPP Architects / Urban Designers we supported ‘‘DO IT DAY’’ which was annual giving back day promoted by Greater Good.
So we used this as an opportunity to help the Edith Stephens Wetland Park and also use it as a team building exercise.
We were supported by Murray Roberts with materials.

COMMUNITY MEETING CENTER - JFCA
We were approached by a group in the local community to investigate the potential for a center for young pregnant mums and mums with young babies.
In association with the Hout Bay Partnership some shipping containers are to be made available to house a small office and lecture rooms to help empower these young mums going forward.
We played around with some layouts and the "protective courtyard" environment was crucial to making this work.

KIDS PLAY PARK - IMIZAMO YEHTU
This was a quick sketch to support an initiative to upgrade an existing run down play area with a vision of what could be done.
